A Guide to Euro Cylinders at CitySafe

Here at Citysafe UK we sell a range of euro cylinders, including 3 Star BSI Kitemarked Cylinders, 1 Star BSI Kitemarked Cylinders and the TL Standard Cylinder.

But what does all the mean? Here is our guide to Euro Cylinders at CitySafe UK:

What is the BSI Kitemark and the TS007 Standard?

The TS007:2012 BSI Kitemark is the security rating for both door hardware and cylinders. If a product is rated by BSI it will come with a star rating. If it is BSI Kitemarked it means it has proven, after extensive testing, that it is capable of defending against a range of lock breaking-techniques and intruder attacks.

The Kitemark is a UK product and service quality accreditation operated by the British Standards Institution. The TS007 standard has been developed by Secured by Design, the Door and Hardware Federation and the Glass and Glazing Federation.

Euro cylinders can have 1 of 2 security ratings under the BSI Kitemark1 star or 3 star. If a cylinder is not star rated then it is not BSI Kitemarked and its level of security has not been measured.

Star Ratings

Cylinders are tested on their ability to defend against certain lock breaking techniques. For a cylinder to gain a 1 star rating is must pass the criteria set out on BS EN 1303:2005 but it does not pass snapping tests.

3 star Kitemarked cylinders pass both tests, proving to withstand 5 types of attack; drilling, picking, bumping, snapping and plug extraction.

Please note that 3 star cylinders are the newest generation of cylinders and locks that have passed an older Kitemark, prior to TS007:2012 have not been tested for lock snapping.

Why is there no 2 star rating for cylinders you might ask? The 2 star rating is the rating for door hardware which is used with the cylinder. This could be a security door handle, cylinder guard or an escutcheon with inclusive security features.

To achieve a 2 star rating, door hardware must meet standards set out in the PAS24:2007 hardware and cylinder test. During the test the hardware will be fitted with a 1 star cylinder with minimal anti-snap features, but overall the cylinder should still pass snapping tests because of the additional protection from the hardware.

Recognising the Kitemark on Cylinders

Recognising the Kitemark is simple, the Kitemark logo along with the number of the stars the cylinder has been awarded will be shown underneath where the key is inserted into the cylinder.

CitySafe Cylinders

Both our 1 star cylinder and 3 star cylinder have been tested and accredited as BSI security products. They have been made with security in mind and passed all relevant testing.

CitySafe TL Standard Cylinders, though they haven’t been tested by the BSI Kitemark also have anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-bump properties.
